ATE TANKERS – WHO WE ARE

our company

ATE is a specialist Australian road tanker engineering and manufacturing company, dedicated exclusively to the design, engineering and manufacture of road tankers. From our Melbourne manufacturing facility, we deliver integrated solutions that combine practical engineering, controlled manufacturing, rigorous quality assurance and long-term customer support to meet the evolving needs of Australia’s transport industry.

ATE TANKERS – OUR STORY

our story

ATE commenced operations in 1998 with the construction of a single road tanker in a modest factory in Laverton North, Victoria. What began with one tanker and one clear vision—to establish a specialist Australian road tanker manufacturer—marked the beginning of a business dedicated exclusively to the design and manufacture of road tankers.

Over the years, ATE steadily expanded its engineering capability, manufacturing facilities and product offering, investing in skilled people, specialised equipment and modern production processes. Each stage of the company’s growth has been driven by a commitment to meeting the changing requirements of Australia’s transport industry while remaining focused on road tanker manufacturing.

That journey has shaped the business and laid the foundation for the ATE of today.

(1998) - The Beginning

ATE is established in Laverton North, Victoria, specialising in the design and manufacture of rigid fuel tankers for the Australian petroleum transport industry. Operations commence with a small team and a focus on quality engineering.

(2009) - Expansion & Growth

Following a decade of growth, ATE relocates to Sunshine West, Victoria. The larger manufacturing facility supports increased production capacity, expanded engineering capability and the introduction of trailer manufacturing.

(2010-2016) - Broadening

ATE expands its product portfolio to include: Trailer road tankers, Aviation refuelling equipment, Dispensing and metering systems, Bespoke tanker solutions, Large fleet programs The company also expands its manufacturing footprint to support continued growth.

(2017) - Excellence

ATE achieves its fastest complete tanker build—from steel plate to customer delivery—in just 31 days, demonstrating the efficiency of its engineering and manufacturing operations.

(2018–2023) - National Projects

ATE delivers major fleet programs for Defence and many of Australia's leading fuel distributors, transport operators and commercial fleets, reinforcing its position as a specialist road tanker manufacturer.

(2023) - Australian Made

ATE becomes the world's only Certified Australian Made road tanker manufacturer, reinforcing its commitment to Australian engineering and local manufacturing.

Today - Looking Ahead

Operating from Sunshine West, Victoria, ATE continues to design and manufacture road tankers and bulk liquid transport equipment for the petroleum, waste oil, vacuum, bitumen and transport industries, while investing in engineering capability, manufacturing technology and product development

ATE TANKERS – HOW WE DELIVER ROAD TANKERS

from concept through to completion

Every ATE Road Tanker follows a disciplined process from understanding the customer’s operational requirements through to engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, delivery and ongoing support.

1. Requirements

We work closely with you to understand your application, operational and compliance requirements. During the requirement stage we offer advice on the best solution for your operation.

2. Engineering

Our engineers leverage 25-years of industry experience to design practical, compliant and manufacturable designs built for performance. Every design considers operational performance, regulatory requirements and long-term reliability.

3. Manufacturing

Skilled tradespeople and controlled production processes convert engineering drawings into high-quality road tankers. We use proven procedures, qualified welders and quality materials to build each road tanker to engineering specifications.

4. Stage-Gate Quality Control

Quality is built in at every stage. Our stage-gate processes include formal hold points throughout manufacture with rigorous checklists completed to ensure Australian Standards, ADR, NHVR and other regulatory requirements are met.

5. End Of Line Tests and Checks

Each tanker undergoes End Of Line commissioning tests and verification checks to ensure it is ready for use and compliant with Australian standards, regulations and customer requirements.

6. Delivery & Support

ATE provides technical support, servicing, inspections and replacement parts throughout the operational life of the equipment.

ATE TANKERS – ENGINEERING

ENGINEERING CAPABILITY

25 years of Australian road tanker engineering

Every successful road tanker begins with sound engineering. Our engineers develop practical, compliant and manufacturable solutions that reflect how equipment will be used in the field. Every design considers operational performance, regulatory requirements and long-term reliability before production commences.

STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT

As a road tanker OEM operating for over 25-years, ATE provides advice to the fuel industry.

ATE are members of the ME-057 Australian Standard Committed Working Group responsible for developing and maintaining AS2809 standards for road tankers handling hazardous liquids and gasses.

ATE also participates in Safe Load Pass (SLP) and National Bult Tanker Association (NBTA) events.

PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS

Our engineering team are members of the Engineers Australia and are certified on the National Engineering Register (NER).

REQUIREMENTS BASED APPROACH

Each project starts with understanding how the equipment will be used and what the customer is trying to achieve.  A technical specification is then developed capturing operational requirements, Australian Standards & Regulations, ADR, National Heavy Vehicle Standards and other relevant standards.

FINITE ELEMENT ANAYLSIS (FEA)

ATE employee dedicated FEA engineers to conduct computational studies on how road tankers will perform when exposed to real world forces like weight, vibration, heat and pressure.  FEA engineering is mandated under Australian Standards such as AS2809.  FEA studies ensure compliance, prevents field issues due to structural fatigue and allow for weight optimization by removing unnecessary materials.

ATE TANKERS – MANUFACTURING

MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY

Where Engineering Becomes Reality.

Every ATE road tanker is manufactured in Melbourne using skilled tradespeople, controlled production processes and documented quality assurance. Engineering intent is maintained throughout fabrication, assembly, inspection and testing to ensure every tanker is delivered exactly as designed.

AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING

We are the only certified Australian road tanker manufacturer.

Raw materials are sourced from Australian suppliers where possible with aluminium and steel sourced from Australian mills.  Customized ATE aluminium extrusions are manufactured by Capral Australia.

Each road tanker is manufactured in Melbourne by skilled tradespeople dedicated to road tanker fabrication and assembly.

FULL CAPABALITY DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE SERVICE

ATE offers a full capability design and manufacturing service.  This includes the design, fabrication, installation and calibration of pumping systems.  Our full capability range enables ATE to control all aspects of manufacturing guaranteeing a quality outcome.

FROM RAW MATERIALS TO FINISHED ROAD TANKERS

ATE tankers are manufacturer from raw materials converted into components and assemblies.  Our laser cutter and press brake equipment manufactures components from raw aluminium and steel sheets. Our expect fabricators then convert components into sub-assemblies which are then assembled into a road tanker.  Importantly, ATE manufactures barrels and running gear from raw materials.

Customers are welcome to visit ATE’s factory to see how road tankers are made.

QUALITY CONTROL

ATEs production process is controlled using a stage and gate system.  At the end of each production stage a quality gate ensures the required quality tests and inspections are conducted and documented.

When the road tanker is completed an additional End Of Line test and check is conducted with final inspections conducted by engineering, technical sales, production and quality managers to ensure compliance to specification and ATEs standards.

ATE TANKERS – LEADERSHIP TEAM

THE PEOPLE SHAPING ATE’S FUTURE

ATE’s leadership team is responsible for more than managing the business. They are committed to strengthening ATE’s engineering capability, investing in Australian manufacturing and ensuring the company continues to meet the changing needs of Australia’s transport industry.
